WJTN News Headlines

Jamestown police are investigating another armed robbery... but, involving a different suspect from the previous two recently in the city.  Police Lieutenant Paul Abbott says a tall, black male entered the 7-Eleven store at 11-01 East Second Street just before 2 AM yesterday... and, walked directly towards the two employees at the counter.
Abbott says it does NOT appear the lone bandit got into any kind of vehicle... but, he remains at large.  He says this robbery appears totally unrelated to the one's involving a white suspect wearing a "Tail Gate Party" sweatshirt.  Abbott says the two employees were rattled... but, followed store procedures... and, he adds they gave police some good information. Again... police describe the robber as a black male, 6-foot-2... with a dark complexion and wide nose.  He was wearing a black-ooded sweatshirt... black pants and black boots.  If you have any information on this case... call City Police at 483-7531... or their confidential tip line at 483-TIPS... that's 483-8477.

State leaders are generally upbeat about the new, 2014-2015 budget that cleared the State Legislature last night.  During a news conference Tuesday morning... Governor Andrew Cuomo says its the fourth straight year the state has had an on-time spending plan. The budget includes the Governor's proposed two-year tax freeze on local property taxes.  Cuomo believes local government costs are driving people out of the state. But... not everyone is pleased with the final spending plan... including Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino who is seeking the Republican nomination for Governor.  He says, quote -- "a state budget that raised spending by a nickel is a failed opportunity."

There was good news for most school districts in Chautauqua County in the final, 2014-2015 budget approved by the state legislature late Monday night.  The news was especially good for Jamestown... which was facing a projected 2.55-million dollar shortfall in it's 2014-15 spending plan.  Superintendent Tim Mains says he's very encouraged by the district receiving another 1.9-million dollars in state aid... which he says will leave about a 600 to 700-thousand dollar spending gap.  Mains says he and Assistant Superintendent for Administration Dale Weatherlow will now develop a number of options for the school board to consider next week to close that gap.
Mains says the state budget will provide another 1.4-million dollars in Foundation Aid... and, 476-thousand in GEA funding.  That's some of the money that's been taken away over the past five years when the state has been running a deficit.  Mains says the district would have to receive a one-million dollar GEA to eliminate the gap.  The total state aid for Jamestown will go up 6.4-percent to 56.7-million dollars.

Thousands of gun rights supporters have rallied at the state Capitol against gun control measures championed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.  Celebrity businessman Donald Trump and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino both addressed Tuesday's event at Empire State Plaza.  The rally was in support of repealing a 2013 law that prohibited the sale of some popular guns like the AR-15.  Trump, who said last month that he would not challenge Cuomo, says the law demonstrates the erosion of Second Amendment rights.  Astorino, the Westchester County executive, says that if elected he'd work to rescind the law.  Cuomo and gun control advocates pushed the legislation following the 2012 Newtown, Connecticut school massacre.

The charitable foundation created by western New York supermarket founder Robert Wegman is giving 17-million dollars to the University of Rochester.  The university says Tuesday that it will receive 10-million dollars for the Institute for Data Science... and, 7-million dollars toward construction of the new Golisano Children's Hospital.  The gifts from the Rochester-based supermarket chain bring to 20-million dollars the amount of recent contributions by the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation.  The University of Rochester has made the emerging field of data science the focus of its five-year strategic plan and plans to construct a 25-million dollars, 50,000-square-foot facility.  Data science involves making sense and use of vast quantities of information and data.  The new 145-million dollar hospital already is under construction and is expected to open next year.

Monthly alternative parking has taken effect in Jamestown as of Tuesday.  City police say vehicles are to be parked on the odd-numbered side of the street during odd-numbered months... and, only on the even-numbered side of the street during even numbered months.  Police say vehicles should be moved at 10 AM on the first-day of each month... and, there is no grace period.
