Jack White gifts signature guitar to viral guitarist who purposefully butchers classic riffs

Jack White has gifted a social media star one of his signature guitars, after she went viral for posting clips of herself performing classic guitar riffs — badly.

Charlene Kaye has amassed a social media following thanks to videos where she butchers iconic songs while playing in a Guitar Center just to anger men.

Well, apparently White is a fan. In a new post, Kaye revealed that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer sent her one of his signature Triplecaster guitars.

“I don’t know how to say this without bragging, so I’m just gonna brag,” Kaye says in the post. “Jack White sent me a guitar.”

She adds that after playing a gig at White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, she met his wife, Olivia Jean, who let her know that White was a fan and wanted to send her the instrument.

“It’s so dope, because not only does it mean that he is a feminist, he also has a sense of humor,” Kaye says of White’s fandom. “So, thank you, thank you Jack, for this beautiful Triplecaster, and to honor your legacy, I have started an all-Asian White Stripes cover band called the Rice Stripes.”

She then sang what she said was the band’s debut single, performing a parody of the White Stripes classic “Seven Nation Army.”

What could be cooler than being a roadie on Iron Maiden's Run for Your Lives tour? Maybe being a beer roadie on the tour.

The Lagunitas Brewing Company, which makes Iron Maiden's line of signature beers, is offering fans the chance at an all-expenses-paid but limited-time job when the U.S. leg of the Run for Your Lives tour starts Sept. 5 in New Jersey.

The winning candidate will be trained by Lagunitas brewers and educators in the brewing, handling and serving of Iron Maiden's Trooper West Coast IPA. Then they'll hit the road as an ambassador for the brews at the Eddie's Dive Bar pop-up events that will be held during select tour stops.

If you want to apply for the job, submit a 30-second video to BeerRoadie.com answering the question, "What would make you the ideal candidate as the Trooper Beer Roadie?” The applicants will be narrowed down to three finalists, who will be interviewed by the Lagunitas selection committee.

The winner will then go on to receive their training at Lagunitas' headquarters before the tour starts. You've got to get your videos uploaded by the end of the day on July 7.

Evanescence's Amy Lee on gender equality in music: 'I don't want to be the best female-fronted rock band'

Evanescence, 'Sanctuary' album artwork (BMG)

Evanescence is out with their new album, Sanctuary, but this year also marks the 20th anniversary of their album The Open Door. Frontwoman Amy Lee says things have definitely improved when it comes to gender equality in music since 2006.

"When we were starting out, most of the time I was the only woman I’d see all day at festivals, besides anyone I had with me in my crew," Lee tells the U.K. publication MusicWeek. "On the one hand, that made things intimidating. But on the other hand, [it was] powerful because we were different and I had something to say."

"Over the last 20 years, hell yeah, I’ve watched things change," Lee continues. "When I go to festivals now, there are always other women on stage, so we have seen progress, especially in heavy music."

But Lee would rather dispense with the gender divisions altogether.

"I don’t want to be the best female-fronted rock band; I want to be the best rock band, period," she notes.

She adds, "Whether you’re male or female, whatever colour you are, or wherever you come from, none of that should matter. What should matter is that you’re great at what you do. And all the women that I lift up, all the women we’re taking on tour – they all rock. That’s why they’re coming on tour with us.”

Among the artists joining Evanescence for their world tour, starting June 11, are Spiritbox, Nova Twins, Poppy and K.Flay. Amy's happy that her collaborations with some of those artists, plus Halsey and Bring Me the Horizon, have led to younger audiences discovering Evanescence.

Says Lee, "When we earn new fans at this stage, hearing new music we make and getting into us that way, that really feels like the goal."

The Offspring's Dexter Holland lets the good times roll with Electric Callboy

The Offspring's Dexter Holland has come out and played with a new crew: the German band Electric Callboy.

Holland has collaborated with the band on the new single and video "Let the Good Times Roll" from Electric Callboy's upcoming album, TANZNEID, due out Aug. 7.

"When Electric Callboy sent us the track, it immediately put a grin on our faces," says The Offspring's Dexter Holland in a statement. "It's energetic, unpredictable and doesn't take itself too seriously — exactly the kind of spirit we've always loved about punk and rock music. I had a blast being part of 'Let The Good Times Roll' and can't wait for everyone to hear it."

Electric Callboy adds, "The Offspring have been one of the bands that shaped us from the very beginning. Their music was part of our lives long before Electric Callboy even existed, so having Dexter on this song honestly feels surreal."

The video for the track features Howie Mandel; comedian Brian Posehn; "John Goblikon," the mascot of the death metal band Nekrogoblikon; and, of course, Holland — because you can't keep 'em separated.

Lamb of God takes the field for Heavy Metal Night at Virginia ballpark

Lamb of God got a chance to perform in front of a very different crowd on Thursday.

The rockers took the field at CarMax Park in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia, to throw out the first pitch in honor of the park’s Heavy Metal Night. Drummer Art Cruz did the honors of throwing out the pitch, and actually made it over home plate.

But that’s not all. The band’s Mark Morton and Willie Adler performed the national anthem on guitar before the game, where the Richmond Flying Squirrels took on the Erie Seawolves. Later, Art and frontman Randy Blythe led fans in “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.

The band also stuck around to sign posters for fans.

Lamb of God dropped their latest album, Into Oblivion, in March, and wrapped a tour in support of the album in April. They are set to kick off a European tour on July 24 in Turkey. A complete list of dates can be found at Lamb-of-God.com.

In the end, Black Veil Brides named another track similar to an early 2000s rock radio song

'Vindicate' album artwork. (Spinefarm)

The name of Black Veil Brides' song "Vindicate," the title track off the band's new album, may remind you of the Dashboard Confessional song "Vindicated," though tonally the two are very different. Similarly, Black Veil's biggest single is called "In the End," which, of course, shares a name with a Linkin Park hit.

"This is now the second time that I've named something either the same or very similar to [an] early 2000s rock radio song that the tonal nature of the lyrics is completely diametrically opposite," frontman Andy Biersack tells ABC Audio.

Biersack describes Linkin Park's "In the End" as a sad song, while he feels Black Veil's "In the End" is "very life-affirming and spiritually positive." Meanwhile, on Dashboard's "Vindicated," frontman Chris Carrabba sings he's "seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself," which is maybe a little bit more heartwarming than Biersack declaring, "I'll f****** vindicate my life/ And bury what's left of you" on BVB's "Vindicate."

Biersack wasn't thinking of Dashboard Confessional when he choose the word "Vindicate" for the song and the album. Instead, he was contemplating its relationship to and the subtle differences between it and the idea of revenge.

"Revenge is a sort of literally device of getting back at somebody," Biersack says. "The song 'Revenger' on the record is, 'You did me wrong, I'm gonna kill you,' sort of thing. That is not what my aspiration is, that is not what my artistic drive is. It's about proving people wrong."

"The record, in some ways, you could go, 'Oh, this record's about revenge,'" he continues. "And it is, but it's about a very specific type, which is more about a personal victory than it is about the overall victory."

VINDICATE the album is out now.

Josh Klinghoffer on the 'slight disrespect' of Red Hot Chili Peppers not playing music he made with them

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer performs at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on March 12, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Image

Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has shared his thoughts about the Red Hot Chili Peppers rarely playing songs from the albums he appeared on.

Klinghoffer joined the Peppers in 2011, replacing John Frusciante, who took over on guitar in 1988 following the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak. Frusciante appeared on many of their hit albums, including 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik and 1999's Californication.

Klinghoffer was with the group until 2019, when Frusciante returned, and appeared on 2011’s I’m With You and 2016’s The Getaway. In an interview with Guitar World, he was asked whether it bothered him that those albums are “ignored by the band."

“Not really," he replied. "It’s a funny thing. I guess it’s particular to the way John views the band when he’s not in it, and it makes sense to me. They have enough music that they don’t need to look to some of the other records."

"I guess it’s just something unique to that band, you know? Having such a revolving door there, and such a strong presence in John," he added. “He’s kind of the preeminent guitar player, you know? He’s the one who made the work with them where they experienced their global fame."

Frusciante acknowledged that there seems to be “a little bit of a slight disrespect to the records that aren’t the John records. Once John’s back in the picture, it’s like the other records don’t exist.”

“That’s the only weird thing to me, because those records were important at the time, you know?” he said. “They were important enough to go and play them around the world.”

Klinghoffer's solo project, Pluralone, will release the new album A Drop in the Ocean on June 12.

Korn bassist gets stolen instruments back thanks to Nevada police department

Korn bassist Ra Diaz with his recovered Chilean flag bass (Handout photo: Henderson, Nevada Police Department)

Many rockers have had their instruments stolen, but few can say that their ordeal ended as happily as that of Korn bass player Ra Diaz.

According to the police department in Henderson, Nevada, several weeks ago Diaz's entire bass collection was stolen from a storage unit — a collection he'd spent years building. But when a local saw one of the stolen basses being sold at a store, they called the Property Crimes Unit; an officer went on to recover every one of Diaz's stolen instruments.

One of the recovered instruments is decorated with the Chilean flag, which Diaz had planned to play in his home country during the band's concert there in May. In a new video posted by the department, Diaz, speaking from Chile, offered his thanks.

"Honestly, getting this Chilean flag bass [back] was pretty emotional. It means a lot to me personally ... so having it again in my hands, it's huge," Diaz said. He added that he dedicated the band's show to "not only all my Chilean friends and family and people" but also to "the men and women of the Henderson Police Department."

He added, "We really appreciate everything you do for us, so thank you so much."

In April, Korn premiered their first new music in four years with the single "Reward the Scars," which they recorded for the Diablo IV video game.

Following a series of shows in South America and Mexico, Korn will start a run of European and U.K. dates in October.

Amy Lee endeavors to 'hold on to my heart' on new Evanescence album, 'Sanctuary'

'Sanctuary' album artwork. (BMG)

Over 20 years after singing "Bring Me to Life," Amy Lee is now bringing the fight on Evanescence's new album, Sanctuary.

"I feel like as human beings with hearts and souls in the world today, we are up against a lot," Lee tells ABC Audio.

Throughout the record, Lee often directs her fury toward an unspecified "you," which one might interpret as representing pain or societal injustice.

"The album goes across a lot of social issues that are just unavoidable now, and it's just because that's the world that we live in," Lee says. "All we can do is react, right? We can't control what happens to us, all we can control is the way that we respond, and I'm doing my best to respond in a way that helps inspire people."

Lee's response is soundtracked by a whole bunch of heavy guitar riffs as she and her band ride into sonic battle for 11 tracks. The 12th and final song, though, titled "Wide Open Heart," comes to the conclusion that the greatest weapon we have in the fight against injustice is just that.

"I guess I kinda came to this new mantra and this new place that the biggest challenge and the biggest fight is internal and it is to hold on to my heart," Lee says. "To hold on to our humanity, hold on to your softness, even though we have to be strong and we have to fight."

"I think that the bravest and strongest that you can be is to, after all that, hold on to your compassion and your empathy and even your vulnerability," she continues. "Those things are powerful, and love is the most powerful force in the universe."

Sanctuary is out Friday. Evanescence will launch a U.S. tour June 11 in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Eddie Van Halen 'ruined rock guitar,' according to The Jesus and Mary Chain

You can say a lot of things about the late Eddie Van Halen, but you can't deny that he was an incredible guitar player, right? Or maybe you can, if you're The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Speaking to Stereogum, Jim Reid of the Scottish alt-rock duo talked about how, when it comes to playing guitar, sometimes simpler is better. "I can play guitar, but only just. It’s kinda deliberate. I play guitar to the level that I need to play guitar," he said. "And sometimes knowing too much about making music gets in the way, and it ends up back to Eddie Van Halen again, do you know what I mean?”

Jim's older brother and bandmate William Reid then chimed in.

"I think guitar players should never learn scales. I think the worst guitar players in the world, like Eddie Van Halen -- I can’t stand Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing," said William. "I think he ruined rock guitar all through the ’80s and ’90s ’cause so many people copied him."

“And I just couldn’t get any of that playing as fast as you f****** can and cramming as many notes in one second as you could," William went on.

So whose playing does he admire?

"I listen to Peter Hook's bass riffs, and I think that’s a thousand times better than anything Eddie Van Halen could ever conjure up," said William. He was referring to the New Order and Joy Division bass player, who'll be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year.

Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss and husband welcome baby boy

Nita Strauss is a new mom.

The Alice Cooper guitarist and husband Josh Villalta welcomed their first child, son Maxwell James Villalta, on May 28, People reveals in a new interview with the couple. The couple also shared photos of Maxwell on Instagram.

"We're in the full on newborn trenches: exhausted, running on fumes and figuring new parenthood out as we go, and it's still been the most fulfilling and incredible time of our lives," Nita tells the mag. "Even after only a few days of motherhood, it's already the best thing I've ever done."

As for the origin of their son's name, Josh explains, "Whatever he does in his life, we hope he does it to the max!" adding, "His middle name is James, after Nita's dad, musician James Strauss."

Nita describes giving birth as the “hardest thing I've ever done” but it was well worth it.

“I've always heard people say ‘You don't know true love until they put your baby on your chest for the first time,' but I never fully understood it until it happened to me!" she says. "It was as if the rest of the world melted away and we were in a vortex bringing a new life into this world."

"I'm excited for every phase of this new chapter, from right now as we're learning to care for a newborn to bringing our son along for the ride on tour when the time comes!" Strauss says of motherhood. "It's going to be amazing, chaotic, and exciting and we wouldn't have it any other way."

Strauss and Villalta, who married in 2024, revealed they were expecting in January. Cooper announced in April that 22-year-old guitarist Anna Cara would be filling in for Strauss on tour while she's on maternity leave.

Pearl Jam, Jack White, make 'New York Times' readers’ choice list of the greatest living American songwriters

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. (ABC)

The New York Times released a list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters back in April, based on feedback from more than 250 music insiders and six Times critics. The list drew criticism from music fans, so the paper has now decided to give them their say.

The Times has now released a readers' choice list of the 100 greatest American songwriters, noting, "As soon as we decided to make a list of the 30 greatest living American songwriters, we could guess how readers would respond to the results: with a combination of enthusiasm and outrage, quickly letting us know which of their favorites we had unconscionably forgotten."

"We didn’t want all that passion to go undocumented. So we invited readers to assemble their own list — with a formal poll," they added.

The new list is the result of over 25,000 ballots cast, resulting in “nearly 12,000 distinct choices,” which were narrowed down to 100 artists.

Of those 100 artists, many of them did not make the original list, including R.E.M. at #25, Jack White at #49, Pearl Jam at #52, Beck at #56 and Trent Reznor at #83.

Other songwriters recognized only by readers include: Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, The National, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Noah Kahan, Phoebe Bridgers, Justin Vernon, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Dave Matthews.
