Edwards urges county residents, seasonal residents, to be on look-out for two invasive plant species...

County residents... and, those visiting... are being asked to be on the look-out for two invasive aquatic plants on Chautauqua Lake this Summer.  County Executive Greg Edwards says that people should first be on the look-out for the Water Chestnut.  That plant was found on four different occasions last Summer.  Edwards says it's a "rooted, aquatic annual plant" that has green, glossy, triangular leaves in a rosetta.  He says each plant can produces up to 15 nutlets... and each of those can produce five more plants.  Edwards adds that Hydrilla has NOT be discovered here -- yet.  However... he says it's been seen near Tonawanda near Buffalo... so it may be just a matter of time.  Edwards says Hydrilla is a long, slender plant that has "toothed" edges on it... making it unique.  It's also one of the most invasive species in the world.  Edwards says they have photos on the county's website... but, asks anyone who comes across either plant to not touch it... but, get a picture of it.  That... along with it's exact location should be sent to Watershed Coordinator Jeff Diers in the county's Planning Department.  Or... you can contact County Executive Edwards' office at 753-4211... and, professionals will be brought in.
