WJTN News Update for Fri., July 22, 2022

(***Update)Body of charter captain missing since July 7, recovered near town of Evans...
The body of a Coudersport, Pa. man has been found in Lake Erie... two weeks after he went missing after falling off his chartered fishing boat near the town of Ripley.  Sheriff's officers say 70 year-old Fred Forsythe, Jr., who was captain of the boat, was found near the town of Evans in Erie County this morning.  Deputies say they received a 9-1-1 the morning of July 7 that Forsythe was attempting to bring a fish into the boat when he lost his balance and fell into the water.  Officers say his charter guests were unfamiliar with the boat's operation and were not able to get the boat turned around before Forsythe disappeared under the water.  An active search involving the Sheriff's Department... the county's Water Emergency Team... State Police Underwater Recovery Team... and the Coast Guard... failed to find Forsythe for five days.


Fire damages Dunkirk home... but, firefighters make quick work...
Dunkirk city firefighters made quick work of a fire at 40 Armadillo St. late this morning.  Fire Chief Mike Edwards says crews responded to the fire around 11:45 a.m., and they found heavy fire coming from a first-floor apartment.  Edwards says it was starting to spread into the second floor.  However... he says crews quickly got water on the flames.  No injuries were reported.  Edwards says the occupants able to get out of the building.  Dunkirk received mutual aid from nearby East Dunkirk.


Wendel announces appointment of new HR Director for county...
A human resources director from Warren, Pa. has been appointed to be the new director of Human Resources for Chautauqua County.  County Executive P.J. Wendel Friday announced his choice of Deborah Makowski to fill the post vacated earlier this year by Jean Riley.  Wendel says Makowski was Executive Director of Human Resources at Warren General Hospital... and, in that capacity... she was responsible for employee relations, benefits management, collective bargaining agreement negotiations, recruitment, and orientation for more than 650 union and non-union employees.  She also previously worked as a Human Resources Business Partner at Wells Enterprises... and, did Human Resources and Community Relations at Cockaigne Resort.
