Sundquist annouces five-part Public Safety Initiative in the city...
Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist has unveiled a five-part public safety initiative that he says uses community-focused policing to build on recent successes. During a press conference Tuesday afternoon... Sundquist announced the "Safer Jamestown N.O.W -- or Neighbors on Watch" program.  The announcement comes as Jamestown has been awarded a Gun-Involved Violence Elimination -- or GIVE Grant -- of about $261,000 from New York state.  Sundquist says the first part is providing more resources to create and reinvigorate the city's Neighborhood Watch programs.  He says while most of the programs are still operating, they have waned in recent years.  Sundquist says the plan to use much of the GIVE grant to create a youth diversion program that's focused on youth in the community to keep them away from violent crime.  Police Chief Tim Jackson says their recently hired "Community Service Officer" has already paid dividends... along with the just-filled "Quality-of-Life" officer.  Among the other steps that have been taken... says Jackson... are  more community-directed patrols and beat officers across the city to levels not seen in many years.

Ribbon is cut on new exhibit for "Carolines on Broadway" at National Comedy Center...
The newest exhibit at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown has been officially opened.  The ribbon was cut Tuesday afternoon on the exhibit about the 40-year legacy of Carolines on Broadway comedy club in New York City.  The founder of Carolines on Broadway, Caroline Hirsch, joined Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson for the ribbon cutting.  Gunderson says it was great to have Hirsch, whom she considers one of the "greatest champions" of the art of comedy in the nation, on hand for the event.  Gunderson described what people will see when they view the exhibit... including Caroline's barfly stools... the iconic doors... and, the backdrop from the stage.  Hirsch got to meet Gunderson when the center director would travel to New York City to check out stand-up talent... and, the seeds were planted for what might happen if Carolines closed.  That happened when Hirsch's lease was up late last year... and, they didn't renew.  Gunderson says -- starting with Jay Leno in the mid-1980s -- comedians often promoted their shows at Carolines on late night TV.  Hirsch praised the Comedy Center for the work it's doing to preserve, and high-light comedy and it's history.
