With school year winding down, Whitaker reminds students and parents about staying safe during the "100 Deadliest Days of Summer..."
We are into the "100 deadliest days of Summer" when the number of teenaged automobile deaths increases dramatically.  With the school year coming to an end... and, graduation two weeks away... Jamestown School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker is urging students everywhere to be careful.  Dr. Whitaker tells us that -- in addition to being a school teacher and administrator -- he was a firefighter for about 10 years... and, was on several rescue calls.  He says distracted driving is a major cause... so keep your eyes on the road... and make sure kids put the phone away when they're driving a vehicle.  Whitaker adds that a lot of fatal accidents also occur when people don't wear seat belts.  As for drinking and driving... he says those numbers have dropped a lot in the last 5 to 10 years... but, adds it's still an issue.  AAA and a number of police agencies also warn about the "100 deadliest days of Summer" leading up to Memorial Day Weekend.  Those "100 days" run from Memorial Day to Labor Day... a time when school is out, and more teens are out driving.

Suspect formally charged, and identified in Dunkirk stabbing incident...
The Dunkirk Police Department has released more details about last week's incident in which two people were stabbed at an address on Lake Shore Drive West.  Dunkirk officers have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Twain Buchanan-Scott, who was allegedly armed with a knife and standing over a female with multiple stab wounds to her body inside an apartment at 123 Lake Shore Drive West back on May 30.  Buchanan-Scott was quickly taken into custody without incident, and officers located a male victim inside the apartment who also had stab wounds.  Both stabbing victims were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. Buchanan-Scott was initially transported to UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown for treatment of injuries he suffered.  He was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging him with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief. Buchanan-Scott was arraigned... and, is being held on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 property bond.

City Acting DPW Director says reconstruction of intersection of Baker St. and Hazeltine Ave. to begin once school lets out for Summer...
A problem intersection near Persell Middle School will be getting a completely new design and reconstruction beginning late this month.  That from Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer... who recently spoke with City Councilman Joe Paterniti about the reconstruction of Baker Street and Hazeltine Avenue.  Roetzer told lawmakers at this week's work session that Chautauqua County is set to begin that project once the school year ends.  He says the county bid out the project in May... and, the contract was awarded to Lakeshore Paving.  Roetzer says he should have drawings of the project plans for the next meeting.  In recent years... there have been near-miss accidents involving cars and children walking to and from school.  A student was hit by a car back in December of 2021... but, fortunately was not seriously hurt.  Roetzer says... once the project begins... that intersection will be closed to traffic until just before Labor Day.  In recent times... the Jamestown school district put more outside supervision in that area because of student tendancies to want to cross over Hazeltine to the plaza across the street.  The school district and city also jointly put in a new crosswalk in that area.

Gillibrand supports Biden's executive order regarding asylum seeker cap at southern border...
The executive order limiting the number of asylum seekers at the southern border signed by President Joe Biden this week has been met with mixed reactions.  Republican leaders say it's "too little too late" and was done with an eye on the November Election... and, the border crisis being high on voters minds.  However... some Democrats say the president's hand was forced when Republicans rejected a bi-partisan immigration bill earlier this year.  One was New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand... who says she applauds the president for doing something after the GOP killed the bill earlier this Spring.  Effecitve immediately... the president's executive order would shut down asylum requests at the U.S.-Mexican border once the average number of daily encounters hits 2,500 between ports of entry, with the border reopening only once that number declines to 1,500.

Bobseine secures third line on ballot for November with "Restore Freedom Party" endorsement...
The Democratic candidate for the 150th New York State Assembly seat this Fall has secured another line on the ballot.  Fredonia's Mike Bobseine says he now has an independent, third line for the Restore Freedom Party.  Bobseine already had secured both the Democratic and Working Families party endorsements in the campaign to replace the retiring Andy Goodell in that seat.  Bobseine is being opposed by Republican Andrew Molitor.  He says "I am excited to have gained this third – and independent – party line for November."  During the campaign... he says "I have found numerous Republicans, and voters who do not affiliate with any of the major parties who want to ‘vote the person, not the party’ and prefer to vote on an independent party line.  He says the Restore Freedom Party provides that opportunity. to support me without having to vote on either of my other lines."  Bobseine says his campaign collected more than 2,000 signatures to qualify for that endorsement... while 1,500 were needed.
