City teen arrested for allegedly possessing gun stolen from Lakewood-Busti Police...
Jamestown teenager has been arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen, loaded gun following a gunshort complaint in the city's southside. City police add that the gun was reported stolen from the Lakewood-Busti Police Department. Officers say they were called to the area of Broadhead Avenue and Kidder Street just after 1 a.m. Wednesday. City police say they spotted 18 year-old Anthony Rivera... who matched the description of the suspect...get into a car in an effort to leave the area. Rivera refused to get out of the car several times... and was eventually removed forcefully without further incident. They searched him, and found the loaded handgun, and, a high capacity magazine. A background check on the gun found it had been stolen from Lakewood-Busti Police. Rivera is charged with third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... fourth-degree criminal possession of Stolen Property... and second-degree obstructon. Rivera was jailed pending arraignment.
Sinclairville man arrested for DWI following collision with tractor...
A 77 year-old man from Sinclairville faces a drunk driving charge after his pick-up truck struck a farm tractor towing a cultipacker from behind last weekend. Sheriff's officers say John Spitale failed to yield to the tractor on Sinclair Drive Extension shortly before 4 p.m. last Saturday when the accident occured. Deputies say Spitale was flown to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for further treatment of his injuries. After further investigation... officers determined that Spitale was operating his pick-up while intoxicated. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated, failure to yield... and moving from lane unsafely. Spitale was issued citations to appear in Gerry Town Court at a later date.
More than 150 attend BPU's third-annual "Retool" conference on clean energy...
The New York Power Authority provides about 25-percent of the electricity used in the state... and, a NYPA representative says she's continually looking for ways to partner with local businesses to provide cheap, and cleaner energy. Maribel Cruz-Brown is the Authority's Senior Vice-President for Customer Solutions... and, was the keynote speaker Tuesday for the Board of Public Utilities third-annual "Retool" conference. Cruz-Brown says she interned for a key manufacturer in Yonkers, New York... but, was dismayed 10 years later -- after college -- to learn the company had left the area. She wondered if the company would still be in New York if they knew about NYPA's programs to help businesses stay in the state. Cruz-Brown says NYPA has been working with Governor Kathy Hochul's administration on the state's "decarbonization mandate..." and says the Niagara Power Project... and, the St. Lawrence Project in Messena... are at the forefront of that. BPU officials say they were very pleased with the day-long program, and the turn-out for it.
Donahue announces her retirement following 2024-25 academic year at SWCS...
After 40 years as an educator... and, administrator... Southwestern Cental School Superintendent Maureen Donahue has announced she'll be retiring at the end of the 2024-25 school year. In a printed statement... Donahue says "I’m looking forward to working hand-in-hand with our Board of Education to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Finishing my final year at Southwestern will be bittersweet, but I am approaching it with the same passion and commitment I brought when I joined our Trojan family in 2014. Our students deserve only the best from me – and from all of us." School Board President Kurt Gustafson says "as Mrs. Donahue prepares to depart Southwestern, she maintains strong support from our board for her compassionate and innovative leadership." Gustafson adds that "her commitment to our students and staff leaves a meaningful legacy for our Trojan family." She was superintendent of the Friendship school district in Allegany County prior to coming to Southwestern.
Buffalo Diocese announces proposed parish mergers, and closings...
The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has announced more recommended closures and mergers of parishes affecting the Southern Tier West Vicariate. The Diocese Tuesday night announced the recommendations during a meeting at the Blessed Mary Angela Parish in Dunkirk. They come following the diocese’s announcement on May 28th to “rightsize and reshape” their parishes by closing or merging about one-third of Western New York’s 160 parishes. The proposed Jamestown-area changes include: Our Lady of Loretto in Falconer merging with St. James... while St. James in Jamestown will close the Our Lady of Victory site. The Panama site will close and become part of Sacred Heart in Lakewood. Holy Apostles Parish in Jamestown will close the St. John Church Family #5 site... the Sherman site will close and join with Christ Our Hope in Clymer... and the Brocton Family #27 site will close and become part of St. Dominic's in Westfield. In the north county... St. Anthony's in Fredonia will merge with Holy Trinity and close... while St. Joseph in Fredonia will merge with Holy Trinity and close. In Silver Creek... Our Lady of Mount Carmel will close the St. Rose of Lima site of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Dunkirk will merge with Holy Trinity and close. The Northern Chautauqua Regional School to remain open and continue at this location with ministry provided by Holy Trinity. Finally... Blessed Mary Angela of Dunkirk will be merged with Holy Trinity.... and St. Hedwig's Dunkirk, and St. Hyacinth, Dunkirk campuses will be closed.
