City Council gets earful from homeless advocates during Monday meeting...
Homeless acvocates in the city of Jamestown made their feelings known to City Council during last night's voting session. During an -- at times -- contentious meeting... those advocates complained that there still wasn't a coordinated effort to deal with the homeless numbers -- which during a recent count was found to be just over 200 on the streets... or in some kind of shelter and getting help. One of them... Mary Diers... says the homeless need to get better information about what's available to them. Diers says there should be a "collective list" of services, and shelters that would be available. Bonnie Weber has been a long-time advocate for the homeless... and, talked about one of them who recently died. Weber says "Teresa" was a person -- like any of them. She says she's "very disappointed in a lot of things." Another resident... Laurie Catalano... says there are people -- like them -- who want to help... and, the city and agencies should take them up on the offers. Another concern raised was the status of the city's "Code Blue" shelters in the Winter. Diers noted that $198,000 had been set aside to fund two such shelters... but only one opened a short time this past Winter.
City leaders respond to homeless advocates...
City officials responded at the end of last night's voting session... urging residents to "bring down the temperature" in the debate over how to deal with the homeless. There was also some good news about one organization that's working to get a permanent "Code Blue" shelter in place. City Development Director Crystal Surdyk says she can't say who it is... yet. Surdyk says the agencies have been working with the county on a new, more permanent "Code Blue" shelter for the homeless when the temperature falls below 32-degrees. Mayor Kim Ecklund says she was optimistic about what came out of last week's meeting of several organizations in Jamestown, who discussed the matter. Ecklund also noted -- again -- that the city has received no funding to help deal with the situation. She reiterated that they've had to use federal, Community Development Block Grant funding for their efforts. Ecklund affirmed what Surdyk says is to be coming out in the coming weeks... but, says it's a local organization heading up that effort... and, they'll be making that announcement.
