Wendel announces opposition to DEC Amendments to Freshwater Wetlands Act...
Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel is now expressing his "firm opposition" to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s proposed amendments to the Freshwater Wetlands Act. Wendel... who had taken a "wait-and-see" approach to the proposals... and, their impact on Chautauqua Lake... now is urging the state to delay the implementation of these new regulations, citing potential harm to local businesses, property owners, and the county’s economy. The position is similar to the new Chautauqua Lake Property Owners Association... headed up by Jim Wehrfritz. Wendel was out of town... and, not available for direct comment. However... in a press release... he says "our lakes, waterways, and wetlands are integral to both the environment and the economic vitality of Chautauqua County. The proposed changes, while well-meaning, could have far-reaching negative consequences." Wendel has supported legislation proposed by State Senator George Borrello that calls for navigable waters -- like Chautauqua Lake -- be exempt from the new regulations. However... Wehrfritz says it doesn't address the shoreline areas. Wendel adds that "we are calling on the state to slow down and consider the local impact of these regulations before moving forward." He says the Clean Water Act and Clean Water Act and New York’s Freshwater Wetlands Act have provided a strong foundation for the protection of wetlands for decades. The new wetlands regulations are to take effect next Jan. 1.
