CCHS officials "blown away" by $1.5-million grant award from the Golisano Foundation...
"We were blown away!" That was the reaction of staff at the Chautauqua County Humane Society after hearing they were being awarded a $1.5-million grant from the Golisano Foundation in Rochester. The Humane Society was one of 82 non-profit organizations in Western and Central New York who were announced as receiving significant monitary awards from the foundation. Humane Society Spokesman Brian Papalia says they were made aware they were receiving something early last week... but until they were notified, they didn't know it was coming. Brian calls it a "game-changing" donation. The announcement was made later in the week by the head of the Golisano organization -- Tom Golisano -- a long time regional entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader. The Humane Society was awarded $1.5-million as part of the awards... which total some $360-million. Papalia says they definately have some needs in the coming months and years the funding will be used for... including new shelter standards in New York state at the end of 2025, and needs of the animals they currently have. Golisano says the unrestricted, multi-year awards range from $250,000 to $20 million each, paid over four to five years, spanning healthcare, education, animal welfare, disability services, and other crucial community needs. Between mostly cats and dogs... Papalia says they have about 75 animals... with most up for adoption. If you would like to check out the animals... the Strunk Road shelter is open 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays... and, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Wdowiasz to release two budgets for Dunkirk lawmakers to consider this week...
Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz is continuing to work on presenting two 2025 budget options to the Common Council... and, she's giving a little more insight into what those proposals will look like. Wdowaisz says there will be a tax increase with both options, which have been dubbed the "green" budget and the "red" budget. She says as of last week, the "red" budget contained a roughly $5-million reduction in services. Wdowiasz says that budget only adds about $125,000 to the budget and would include a tax increase up to the state's legislative cap. However... there would be that up to $5-million cut. Meanwhile, Wdowiasz says the "green" budget would infuse an estimated $2-million into the budget and maintain all services and positions, but would see a larger tax increase which could go up to the city's constitutional taxing limit. Wdowiasz will publicly unveil both of her proposals this Wednesday at Dunkirk City Hall. Also on Wednesday... County Executive P.J. Wendel will present his budget plan during the legislature's monthly meeting.
