One person hurt in Gerry house fire Monday afternoon...
One person had to be treated for minor burns following a house fire about mid-afternoon Monday in the town of Gerry. Sheriff's Department dispatchers say Sinclairville firefighters were initially called to the scene on Old Chautauqua Road about 2:45 p.m., and, found heavy fire coming from the structure. Mutual aid companies were called to help put the fire out. County fire investigators were able to talk with the resident... 75 year-old Charles Austin... and determined the fire started accidentally in a wood stove used to heat a portion of the home. Austin was taken for treatment to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital... and, later released.
Bitter Wind Chills drop to -20 and lower in Jamestown area overnight...
The coldest wind chill in Western New York early this morning was recorded in the Jamestown-area. The National Weather Service in Buffalo reports the Chautauqua County Airport -- near Jamestown -- recorded a - 23 wind chill shortly before 6 a.m. today. The next coldest was a -21 reading in Olean in Cattaraugus County. There's been little in the way of Lake Effect Snow here in Jamestown from overnight. However... there's been plenty of new snow along the Lake Erie Shoreline... with Silver Creek receiving the most the past day with 10-inches. The Weather Service is continuing our Lake Effect Snow Warning and Cold Weather Advisory through late Wednesday morning. The forecast for today calls for a slight chance of snow showers after 4 p.m., but, mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 9. However... wind chill values will be as low as -10. The bitter cold of the past couple of days has raised concerns about the homeless in the area. Chautauqua County officials will hold a press briefing at 1:30 this afternoon in Mayville about that... and, a State of Emergency for Chautauqua -- and several other counties due to the frigid temperatures, and lake effect snow.
Jamestown man is arrested for assault at city business late Sunday night...
A city man is accused of assaulting another person during a domestic incident that occured late Sunday night at a business on Jamestown's westside. City police were called to the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m., and, found that 42 year-old James Turner II had left the location before they arrived. Officers spoke with the victim... and, learned that Turner had allegedly punched them in the face... pulled their hair out... and, injured the person's hand. Police say they found him a short time later at a southside address... and, while speaking with Turner... he failed to comply with orders... and, tried to pull away while being taken into custody. He was taken to the city jail... pending arraignment on charges including third-degree assault... and, second-degree harassment.
One person hurt in snowmobile accident near Forestville...
One person had to be transported to a Buffalo hospital after a snowmobile crashed into a tree near Forestville on Sunday morning. Forestville Fire crews were called to a trail between Creek, and Bradigan Roads shortly after 9:45 a.m., with the crash occurring about 1,000 feet off the road. Officials say the victim -- who was not identified -- suffered non-life threatening injuries. The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and State Police assisted at the scene.
Gillibrand discusseds Trump cabinet appointments and testimony...
With President Trump having been inaugurated for a second-time... attention now moves to his executive orders... and, new cabinet picks. The executive orders have gone at a fairly brisk pace since the inauguration... with dozens already having been signed. However... Senate confirmation of some of Mr. Trump's cabinet picks may take some time. One is Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary. The former FOX News TV host and combat veteran was grilled by Demcrats on the Armed Services Committee. One of them was New York's Kirsten Gillibrand... who blasted Hegseth for comments about women in combat. Hegseth has said in previous interviews that women should not be allowed in combat situations. However... Gillibrand says the women who are in combat have already made it through "vigorous, stringent tests." Gillibrand adds "there are no quotas" for women in combat... and, adds her questioning of the nominee didn't stop there. She also pressed him on members of the LGTBQ community serving as well. Gillibrand also expects there will be some push-back on other appointees... including Tulsi Gabbart for National Security Advisor... and, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for secretary of Health and Human Services. She made her comments during a recent video press conference.
Man arrested after car becomes disabled, and catches fire in town of Harmony...
A town of Harmony man has been arrested for drunk driving after his car stopped and became inoperable before catching fire last Saturday afternoon. Sheriff's officers say 57 year-old Marcus Wells was driving his car when it caught fire... and, local fire crews had to respond to put it out. Deputies say Wells was arrested and charged with stopping/standing/ or parking on a highway... and DWI. He was released with appearance tickets for Harmony Town Court at a later date.
