Meteorologist Heather Kenyon in Buffalo says they're keeping an eye on regional waterways... such as Cattaraugus Creek in northern Chautauqua County. Kenyon says low-lying areas will see the most potential for flooding or high water... mainly in the creeks and streams across the region. Those include the Cattaraugus Creek in northern Chautauqua County where it empties into Lake Erie. Kenyon says there maybe a few hours of dry weather during the day today... but, she says the rain will pick-up later in the day... with a possible thunderstorm later today.
Jamestown using sand and brine-mix to stretch remaining salt through end of Winter...
Our warmer temperatures and the lack of snow is welcome news to Jamestown and other local communities that have faced salt shortages in the past couple of weeks. Chautauqua County recently announced a move to add sand to it's salt mixture to get through the end of Winter. In Jamestown... Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer says they are also using sand to help stretch what salt they have left because the can't get any more. Roetzer says they have enough left for 4 or 5 more snow events. He says their brine mix includes both water and salt. For the most part... Roetzer feels it's been a "very good Winter for plowing..." given the circumstances. He says they have some plow truck drivers who have never dealt with the amount of snow we're received because the past few Winters have been relatively mild.
