More than 200 attend second Chautauqua Lake Symposium to hear more about restoring lake's ecosystem, new DEC regulations...
Some conclusions have been reached... but, many more are works-in-progress regarding Chautauqua Lake's ecosystem. That came out of last Saturday's second-annual Chautauqua Lake Symposium... hosted by County Executive P.J. Wendel. Wendel was pleased with the turn-out of just over 200... and, the interaction between attendees and the various entities involved. Wendel says... while the symposium wasn't necessary... it provided a chance for people to talk face-to-face about issues facing the lake. He says The Jefferson Project is in the process of winding down it's work soon, and the U.S. Army Corps is beginning to ramp up it's work on the lake. One question that received a partial answer is whether decaying weeds at the bottom, and herbicides used in the lake, contribute to the rise of Harmful Algal Blooms. Researcher Dr. Roy Richardson with North Carolina State University says that would be a logical conclusion. However... he says most herbicides are applied early in the growing season... and the early weed growth isn't as mature as later in Summer and Fall. Wendel adds that... one of the most anticpated presentations involved the New York State Department of Enviromental Conservation discussing new wetland regulations... which took effect on January 1st. He felt it was good for people with concerns over what that would -- or would not -- allow to hear it directly from the officials involved.
