Wendel voices several concerns over late, New York state budget...
Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel says he has several concerns regarding the late, New York State budget. However... if it produces a better spending plan... then there may be some good that comes out of it. The at least $250-billion spending plan is being held up due mainly to policy issues. But... Wendel says he hopes it produces a better discovery law for local district attorneys because many prosecutions are either thrown out or not pursued because DAs don't have enough time to gather, and verify evidence and testimony. He adds that he... and, other county executives... would like to see New York state be held to their standards of having local municipalities and schools have to cap their spending at a 2% increase. Wendel believes that's part of the reason why so many unfunded mandates are pushed onto local governments. He says that's also part of the response to people who say county government has expanded in recent years... while the county gets poorer. He also says there needs to be a better way to get people off of public assistance. Wendel made his comments for this coming weekend's Community Spotlight program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.
