Borrello co-sponsor of legislation that would reinstate fired state Corrections Officers...
There's legislation in Albany that would essentially allow the 2,000 New York State corrections officers who were fired after the 22-day wildcat prison strikes to be reinstated. It would provide a grace period until July 1st for those former DOCCS employees to return to full duty without discipline. State Senator George Borrello is a co-sponsor of the bill that was introduced on Thursday. He feels getting those fired officers back on the job is imperative. Borrello says, by her own admission, Gov. Kathy Hochul has stated that it's costing New York $100-million a month for National Guard to help staff corrections facilities. However... the Sunset Bay Republican... adds that the promises that were made to those who are still on the job have not been kept. He says there have been several exposure issues with drugs and other contraband. The legislation was introduced by Dan Stec in the Senate and Scott Gray in the Assembly, one day after Hochul's executive order barring fired corrections officers from local or county governments expired. The ban on state service remains in place.
Langworthy votes in favor of SAVE Act... says it will help improve election integrity...
Local Congressman Nick Langworthy was among the House members who voted in favor of legislation that would require individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections. The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility -- or SAVE Act -- was passed 220-208, with four Democrats joining all Republicans in voting yes. Langworthy said it's "absurd" that there's no federal requirement to show identification at the ballot box... because they are "so many other areas" that require such identification. While critics of the legislation say it would make it harder for millions of citizens to vote... particularly married women... Langworthy describes that as a scare tactic for people that want to keep a system that's "rife for fraud." The SAVE Act would also require states to establish a program to remove undocumented immigrants from existing voter rolls and allow American citizens to sue election officials who don't follow proof-of-citizenship requirements. A companion bill awaits action in the U.S. Senate.
