JPS Board holds budget hearing, official says budget includes some new positions, but, no tax increase...
Jamestown Public School district residents will vote next Tuesday on a spending plan that -- again -- keeps the tax levy -- or amount to be raised by taxes -- flat for the 15th year in a row. The public had the chance to sound off last night on the district's final draft of the $115.8-million, spending plan for 2025-26. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Brittany Spry has been around for five of those 15 years... and, says planning out for 10 years has helped tremendously... along with now receiving adequate state aid. Spry says there was settlement of a statewide lawsuit to restore full Foundation Aid... which was successful. She says that has helped the bottom line the past two years. Spry says the late state budget really didn't have an impact on their state aid numbers from last January when Governor Kathy Hochul proposed her tentative spending plan. She says the district has also been able to hire more staff the past five years to boost student mental health and wellness... along with subject areas, such as math.. She Spry says some 85 positions have been added to help students in those areas, and they are now part of the district's "general budget." The Jamestown Public School's budget will be voted on by the public next Tuesday, May 20 at the three presidents schools in the city.
