JPD identifies 11 year-old struck in truck-bike accident, and has now died from his injuries...
The 11 year-old boy struck while riding his bike on Jamestown's eastside has passed away from injuries suffered in the accident this past Tuesday. In a press release late Thursday... the Jamestown Public Schools said they are "mourning the loss of a Jefferson Middle School fifth-grade student who was fatally injured." The student... identified by police as Daniel Galarza Ramos... passed away Wednesday night at Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo. Daniel was struck by a pick-up truck at the intersection of Willard and Kinney Streets. School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker says they were saddened by the news... and, "our sincere condolences are with the student’s family and friends." He adds that a -- "student's passing has a lasting impact on those close to them and our school district stands ready to offer support to students, staff, and families however needed." Officials add that this may be "a difficult time for students and staff.... and, the Jefferson Middle School’s Crisis Intervention Team is trained and ready to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this." They add that school counselors across the district will also be available to any student to help in dealing with this tragedy.
Investigation underway into Sheriff's Officer-involved shooting that's left a man dead...(and the man has now been identified)...
An officer-involved shooting in the town of Mina Tuesday has left one man dead... and, a Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputy wounded. Sheriff Jim Quattrone says two officers responded to a domestic incident on the Mina-French Creek Road shortly after 3:30 p.m. and, were met by a middle-aged man -- now identified as 66 year-old Mark Bemus -- holding a shotgun... and, pointing it at the officer. During an evening press conference...Quattrone says that officer ordered Bemus to put down the gun... but, he refused to and both exchanged gun-fire after the deputy repeatedly tried to deescalate the situation. Quattrone says fire rescue crews from Clymer... Sherman... and, Findley Lake responded... along with State Police... county EMS... and, The state Attorney General's Office. The sheriff says the deputy was taken for treatment to an Erie, Pa. hospital... where he was treated and released for buckshot wounds. Bemus later died at the scene after EMS tried to save the man. The identity of the officer involved has not yet been released.
Four-day Juneteenth Festival underway in Jamestown... activities pick-up on Saturday and Sunday...
Jamestown's annual Juneteenth celebration will be expanded to a four-day event this year... leading off with a special program at the Robert H. Jackson Center this afternoon and evening. That from one of the organizers... Councilwoman Regina Brackman... during the most recent City Council work session. Brackman says there was a flag-raising... followed by a special Juneteenth film presentation about how faith helped the black slaves finally get their freedom. It's entitled, "Faith and Freedom." She says the big kick-off will be held on Friday night at the Wintergarden Plaza... with a band from Erie, Pa. playing, and hot dogs and refreshments being sold. The majority of Juneteenth events will take place at Jackson-Taylor Park off Washington Street on both Saturday and Sunday. Brackman says they'll have good food and activities on both days... and, the presentation of their scholarships will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the park.
Ecklund says all but one day is being sponsored for 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series to provide free admission...
Many of the needs for the upcoming, 45th-anniverary, 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series are coming together for the mid-August tournament in Jamestown. Local Babe Ruth Committee Vice-President... and, Mayor Kim Ecklund... says they have sponsors now for all but one day of the eight-day series. On last weekend's Community Spotlight program... Ecklund noted that selling sponsorships each day allows local residents... and, those from out of town... to enjoy the games for free. She says the only day remaining to be sold is that Friday... and, they're well ahead of where they usually are for this time of year. In addition... Ecklund says they are looking for more volunteer "Diamond Girls..." who will serve as ambassadors to each team... along with Host Family Ambassadors... who will be involved in showing the teams around and helping them get to places during their time here. Lakewood man arrested in Jamestown on warrants, possession of weapon, and stolen credit card...
A Lakewood man sought on multiple warrants has been arreste following a street check in Jamestown early Thursday morning. City police say a patrol spotted 28 year-old Tyler Manelick near the corner of East Sixth Street and Prendergast Avenue shortly after 6 a.m., and, knew there were warrants for Manelick from both Jamestown city... and, Ellicott town courts. He was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a credit card reported stolen in Lakewood... along with a set of black metal knuckles, and a quantity of suboxone strips. Manelick was arrested on the warrants... and for fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property... third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
