Repair work begins on East Second St. in Jamestown...
Major repair work to a large portion of East Second Street in Jamestown is underway this week... about a month behind schedule. Mayor Kim Eckund says city officials are glad to see state crews finally beginning work to tear up, and replace eroded pavement. Since East Second is a state road... New York has to take the lead in the project. Ecklund says there were two reasons for the delay: The late Spring weather... which included a lot of rain, and the need for an important piece of equipment -- a road milling machine -- the city does not have. The state is working around traffic on East Second... between Foote Avenue and the city line with Falconer... so expect some delays. Ecklund says this will be a temporary fix with the state doing a complete reconstruction next year. She pointed out another reason for the delay in repair work... and, that is having difficulty obtaining some additional properties to improve access for the handicapped. In fact... Ecklund says the City Council had to vote recently to take some property by Eminent Domain for the handicapped accessibility part of the project. She made her comments for this weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

Schumer makes push to preserve federal funding for public broadcasting...
New York's Senior U.S. Senator is pushing to have the chamber vote "no" on the clawing back of more than $45-million for more than a dozen public TV and radio stations across the state. Democrat Charles Schumer says Senate Republicans plan to gut funding for those stations... which he says provides important children's educational programs, news and rural matters. Schumer he's seen it over two generations of his family... including himself watching the nightly news, and later his daughter when she watched Sesame Street. While the funding cuts won't completely gut those stations... Schumer says "every region of the state could face major cuts to community programs... as well as lay-offs." He adds that this could "blow a hole" in many public broadcast station budgets. Overall... Schumer says the move could take more than one-billion dollars away from the country's public radio and television stations, which could devastate communities across the Upstate region. He says in Western New York... WBFO... and, BTPM, Buffalo Toronto Public Media... would loses about 15% of its annual budget.
