Gillibrand proposes Providing Child Care for Police Officers Act to boost child care for law enforcement officers...
A lack of good, available child care has been an issue for law enforcement families... and, New York's Junior U.S. Senator is proposing legislation to deal with the problem. Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand says the Providing Child Care for Police Officers Act would provide $24-million a year in federal funding over the next five years. Gillibrand says providing child care options for officers could help local departments in many ways... including recruitment, and retaining officers. Gillibrand says the bill... which would establish a pilot program to provide child care services for officers... is cosponsored by North Carolina Republican Thom Tillis. Most importantly... she says the measure would allow officers more flexibility in balancing work and their personal lives. In the House of Representatives, Gillibrand says California Congressman Scott Peters is proposing companion legislation there. Police often work extended hours on a nontraditional schedule. In a recent survey, more than 70% of law enforcement agencies reported that recruitment is more difficult now than five years ago, and at one major metropolitan police department, more than half of officers reported having to leave or miss work due to child care issues.
County legislature approves 2026 goals and objectives for Planning and Development Dept. after some debate...
The Chautauqua County Legislature has approved 2026 goals, objectives and performance measures for the county's Department of Planning and Development. However... while the document fullfills the "letter of the law..." it doesn't meet the "spirit of the law." That from Jamestown Democrat Fred Larson... who says the Planning and Economic Development Committee simply used what the department printed instead of working up it's own... and, setting it's own measures of success. Larson offered an amendment to set a goal of increasing the number of jobs in the county... which he says has fallen from about 65,000 to just over 50,000 the past 15 years. That was defeated. Republican Fred Johnson voted against the measure in committee... but, did vote for it Wednesday night. The measure was adopted by the legislature with two members absent, 13-to-4, in a party-line vote.
