Head of CLPOA calls Fourth of July on Chautauqua Lake an "absolute disaster..."
The newest Chautauqua Lake group will be holding it's next meeting on Labor Day in Bemus Point. In the meatime... the head of the Chautauqua Lake Property Owners Association says the Fourth of July on the lake was "an absolute disaster." Those are the feelings of Jim Wehrfritz... who recently addressed the county legislature about the situation. Wehrfritz says lakeside property owners have lost the ability to use the lake because of all the weeds... which he believes are now being protected by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. He says lawmakers and other lake groups need to get more involved. Wehrfritz says local municipalities and others needing to do herbicide treatments or weed removal ended up not being able to because the state Department of Environmental Conservation later ruled those areas were wetlands... and, could be not be treated... nor have weeds harvested. Wehrfritz says the current Lake Alliance has been ineffective... and, should be disbanded for a more central authority... that would include local muncipal leaders whose towns and village are on the lake shore. The CLPOA's next Wetlands Public Meeting will be held at the Bemus Point Golf Club and Tap House on Monday, Sept. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Wendel responds to CLPOA head's comments, says more lake community representation in the works for Lake Alliance...
What's happened on Chautauqua Lake this Summer has been a "perfect storm" of circumstances that's led to weed growth that many long-time residents have said they've never seen before. That from County Executive P-J Wendel... who says the situation has improved... but, it was problematic during the Fourth of July holiday. Wendel says the state Department of Environmental Conservation did not limit the acreage that could be treated with an herbicide this year than last -- in fact -- he says it was increased. The problem was when DEC officials looked at some areas... there were either few weeds or none at all. Wendel says that allowed more of the Curly Pond Leaf invasive to grow in the lake... and, the more native "Elodea..." started growing in the south basin later. He adds permit applications were sent into the DEC for treatment and harvesting too late for the month of May... and, a month was lost there. As for disbanding the Chautauqua Lake Watershed and Management Alliance... Wendel says he first proposed a restructuring of that panel more than a year ago... to include officials from all lake communities, the legislature and lake groups. In recent days... more weed cutters have been out and conditions have improved. Wendel made his comments for this coming weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.
