City man convicted of trying to kill Mayville librarian gets 20 years in prison...
The Jamestown man convicted of trying to kill a librarian in Mayville just short of three years ago will spend 20 years in state prison.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt confirms that County Court Judge David Foley sentenced 23 year-old Xavier Guadarrama to 20 years after pleading guilty to one count each of second-degree attempted murder... and, second-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree attempted assault.  Back on Aug. 23, 2022... Guadarrama took a bus to Mayville, entered the village library and stayed there until closing.  When a staff member told him, and other people that they were closing the library, he stabbed her and fled the scene.  Police found Guadarrama quickly... and, he was taken into custody.  During interviews, he said he tried to kill the librarian, which is why the charge went from assault to attempted murder.  While awaiting trial... Guadarrama also allegedly stabbed a chaplain with a pencil... and, attacked a guard.  He will also spend five-years on parole supervision when he's released.

City Council to consider new zoning to include C-1 in area adjacent and south of Jackson-Taylor Park...
There have been some changes to the proposed rezoning of a significant portion of the northwestern corner of the city of Jamestown.  The city's Department of Development first looked at a general zoning change to R-2.  However... a request has been made to allow certain parcels to be rezoned C-1 for "Local Commercial."  Development Director Crystal Surdyk says each project in that area -- a large part of it wetlands -- will be looked at individually.  Surdyk says they will use the latest FEMA maps of 100-year flood plains when deciding on "every single project."  The potential issue with 100-year storms was raised by resident Doug Champ.  Housing Committee Chairman Bill Reynolds says the committee discussed the merits of not waiting for the city's new Comprehensive Plan and Zoning ordinance... because that will likely take a "couple of years" to complete.  Surdyk says even if some kind of further zoning change is needed -- either for new housing or small business in that area -- next to Jackson-Taylor Park -- it will be reviewed by her department.

BPU General Manager Dave Leathers said the board filed the request with the PSC at the beginning of July... and, they updated it last week.  Leathers says they are now answering questions the PSC has for them in hopes of having it approved, and taking effect next Jan. 1.  However... Leathers did add that final approvals may take another month or two to complete on their request for a 9.96% increase.  He says the BPU has not had an electric rate hike since 2015.

Garfinkle's remember 1980 Babe Ruth World Series experience...
Many good memories were shared during "Ed Garfinkle Day" at Diethrick Park Sunday for the 45th anniversary of the 13 year-old Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown.  Some members of that 1980 team came to celebrate and remember that time... including the Garfinkle's two sons... Geoff and Dave.  Ed was the head coach... while Dave was a player on the team.  He says they played a lot of ball that Summer... against many different teams.  However... he says the world series was harder back then because once you lost your second game... you were done.  But... that's what the Jamestown team did... which Dave says was discouraging.  Still... he says the entire experience was tremendous.  However... it wasn't all baseball and nothing else.  Geoff Garfinkle recalled the Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot being brought to what was then College Stadium... and, his father getting into a staged tussel with the bird after the mascot was brought to the stadium by helicopter.  Both sons continued with baseball and coaching after Jamestown.
