Borrello, Molitor pushing to have city of Dunkirk have independent audit done...
Chautauqua County's two New York state legislators are pushing for answers about why the city of Dunkirk has not submitted an independent audit of its 2024 finances to the State Comptroller's Office. State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Andrew Molitor say the audit, which was due in July, has not been received by the Comptroller's Office... nor legislative offices in Albany. Borrello says he and Molitor are concerned that the city continues to fail to comply with its reporting deadlines... and, Gov. Kathy Hochul is not enforcing them. He adds that he and Molitor have written to Hochul and Mayor Kate Wdowiasz... calling for a detailed explanation regarding oversight efforts to ensure the city's compliance, a timeline on the completion... and, submission of the audit, and a reaffirmation of the city's commitment to fulfilling requirements of the newly-enacted "City of Dunkirk Revenue Anticipation Note Refinancing Act." Wdowiasz says she wasn't aware of any deadline for audit, noting it will take another month to complete...
It will be at least another month before an independent audit of the city of Dunkirk's 2024 finances is complete. That from Mayor Kate Wdowiasz, who updated the matter following Tuesday's Common Council meeting. Wdowiasz says the audit should be completed in 30 to 45-days, which would put it on track towards the end of September. She says a couple of components -- the Dunkirk Housing Authority and Dunkirk Local Development Corporation -- are still missing. She adds the DLDC should be coming in the "next few days." Wdowiasz also cited the ongoing investigation into the City Treasurer's Office by the Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office and New York State Comptroller's Office as also consuming a "lot of time" this year. Her comments come as state lawmakers George Borrello and Andrew Molitor are putting pressure on the city to comply with its financial reporting obligations. Both say the city missed a July deadline to submit it to the state. Wdowiasz says they are incorrect regarding the need to have the audit done by a certain deadline, but adds that she understands the urgency in getting the audit finalized, since it will help get the city into its deficit financing.
