Planning Coordinator Rebecca Wurster of the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development, says muralist Alain Welter's work is entitled "Ahoi," and depicts a bird and a fish in a boat symbolizing the sister cities of Dunkirk, New York and Dunkirk, France. Wurster says, after learning about the devastation left in Dunkirk, France following World War II, and sent them supplies, food and other items to help them get back on their feet. In reading Welter's description of the mural, Wurster said the mural honors an important part of Dunkirk's heritage... including the waterfront. The mural has not been painted yet due to international travel issues for Welter... but, Wurster expects him to arrive in Dunkirk in "a couple of weeks." This will mark the first mural that Welter, who is from Luxembourg, will paint in the United States. Murals were unveiled earlier this month in Falconer, Westfield, and Sherman as part of the Paint CHQ festival.
