Large majority of residents at Celoron public meeting opposed to Cannabis dispensary in village -- mainly near park...
The vast majority of the approximately 50 people on hand for a public meeting about a proposal to "opt-in" to the sale and or consumption of marijuana in the village of Celoron oppose it. The village board held the meeting at the Community Center... and, Mayor Scot Schrecengost said there are three commercial/industrial areas where a dispensary could be located... with one notable exception. Schrecengost says it may not be on the same road, and within 500-feet of a permanent youth facility... such as a school or church. However... a park or playground is not considered part of what the New York state refers to as a "youth facility." The village did opt-out of having a dispensary in 2021 when state was giving communities the option. However... most residents on hand -- including Brandy Smith -- did not feel a dispensary should be anywhere near the new playground at Lucille Ball Memorial Park because there are kids at the playground, and others playing baseball at the sports field. Resident Sue Schrecengost says -- with the new playground equipment -- the park is a nice destination... and, a cannabis dispensary could ruin all the time and effort that's been put in to improving the park.

The owner of Jamestown's first state-approved cannabis dispensary says the former Bindle Barn on Boulevard Street is for sale... but, agreed it may not be the best place for a dispensary. At the same time... Tim Scoma of "Lifted" says it would still be better than a liquor store, because dispensaries are heavily regulated by the state... including checking identification at the door, and having cameras inside and outside the business. Scoma adds that 70% of their business is with people who are 60 or older. Typically... they are looking for cannabis as an alernative to medication. Mayor Schrecengost says the village board will likely discuss the issue at their October meeting.

A Jamestown woman has been arrested for making unnecessary noise after being called to a southside neighborhood last week. When officers arrested on scene... they could hear loud music coming from inside an apartment which was a disturbance to the community. Police then saw a woman outside... who then entered the apartment when officers arrived. Police say they tried to make contact with 31 year-old Debbyan Rivera several times. They finally made contact with Rivera... who was uncooperative. She was issued an appearance ticket for city court.
Molitor joins with other lawmakers in denouncing the rise in political violence...
While state leaders are trying to find ways to deal with the rise in political violence, a local legislator believes more needs to be done besides just "turning down the temperature." State Assemblyman Andrew Molitor believes the solution is "willing the good" of the other person and starting off political conversations by getting to know the other person and not "shouting them down." Molitor says we need to have mututal respect and listen to other people. Molitor also feels that people should also ask themselves whether their opinions on issues are objectively true and also resist the need to "destroy" the other person. He says we should be talking to other people "we should be talking to them with respect." He adds we should not be afraid of other people's opinions. Earlier this month... Governor Kathy Hochul convened a bipartisan group of elected leaders in an attempt to quell political violence in the state.
