Borrello finds areas of agreement, and disagreement in Gov. Hochul's State of State Address...
Local State Senator George Borrello says there are areas in which he agrees with in Governor Kathy Hochul's State of the State Address. However... the Sunset Bay Republican charactorized her speech as "a ship in a storm listing back and forth." Borrello believes Hochul "rightly" focused on New York's affordability issue... but, says it didn't contain anything that he feels is needed to change the state's direction. He says she avoided major policy items like electrification mandates and the Climate Act... which he called the "big elephant in the room..." or the CLCPA that's driving up most energy costs. Borrello says that's because they're "politically sensitive for her." He adds that proposals like scrutinizing executive pay or creating an "affordability monitor" are window dressing. He was also disappointed that Hochul went on what he calls an anti-law enforcement rant at the end of her speech... which he says was "taylored for the New York City radicals" to not cooperate with federal agents looking for illegal immigrants. Borrello says he does support the ideas of universal child care and developing more nuclear power.
NYSSBA official says organization found "number of promising" initiatives in State of State Address...
The organization representing school boards across New York state says there were a "number of promising" initiatives in Governor Hochul's State of the State Address. State School Boards Association Chief Advocacy Officer Brian Fessler says the most encouraging was the governor's call for funding Universal Pre-K education... because he says "more and more folks recognize that Pre-K instruction is not just valuable... but, bordering on necessary." Fessler says -- most importantly -- they want a "real focused (and) organized proposal" that will allow those districts who don't have UPK to do so. He says NYSSBA also wants to know more about the governor's push to emphasize math skills... which is similar to her "Back to Basics" reading initiative. More concrete proposals are expected in the governor's 2026-27 budget proposal next week.
