Gillibrand voices on-going opposition to SAVE Act still before the U.S. Senate...
As with recent polling of Americans... there is bi-partisan support for a measure that would require voter identification to vote in federal elections. However... while Republicans support the "Safeguard American Voting Eligibility" -- or SAVE Act... Democrats continue to voice concern that it will take voting eligibility away from millions of Americans. Among those is New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand... who says... under the current proposal... even a driver's license isn't enough. She says you need a birth certificate that matches your current name... so if you have a birth certificate, but, if it's just in your maiden name, you have to get it changed. She adds about half the population also doesn't have a valid passport... which is also needed in some cases. Gillibrand adds that the measure would also make it difficult for active military service members to vote. The Democrat says the SAVE Act is being pushed by President Donald Trump because he believes it's the only way Congress will remain in Republican hands after the mid-term elections... and, that's why they are fighting against the legislation and calling on Republicans to negotiate a true, bi-partisan bill. The SAVE Act was approved in the House of Representatives last year. However... in the Senate, the measure is the subject of a Democrat fillibuster, that requires 60 yes votes to bring it to the floor. Currently... Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
