CLA answers questions about weed harvesting on lake, and where the weeds go...
Some of the questions from last Saturday's Chautauqua Lake Symposium centered on where the Lake Association can harvest weeds... and, where those weeds are taken.  The questions came up during a question and answer session following all the presentations.  CLA Executive Director Heather Nolan-Caskey says -- for the most part -- the State Dept. of Environmental Conservation allows them to harvest most anywhere on the lake... except where there are no homeowners, or fish "zones."  There was also a question about where the 20-million to 25-million pounds of weeds they harvest each year go.  Nolan-Caskey says most of those weeds go to local farms... and, are used for composting.  Once the invasive Elodea weeds began covering the lake's south basin late year... the CLA stepped up efforts to clear those areas... and, with the help of local towns, and the county, they were able to truck the harvested weeds to local farms.
