Fredonia Under Third Boil Water Notice This Year as Residents Voice Frustration

Fredonia residents are boiling their water again. The village is under a boil water notice as of Wednesday, the third advisory this year, following a brief turbidity-related notice in March and a conserve water order issued last week by the Chautauqua County Health Department. The county says seasonal changes in Fredonia Reservoir water quality slowed treatment and strained the plant, and Emergency Manager Josh Meyers noted that repeated filter backwashing likely pushed turbidity levels higher.

The repeated notices are wearing on people. White Inn General Manager Brittany Ludemann, a thirty-year resident, says it feels like something folks are getting used to, and she doesn’t think they should be. Carmen Quinones, a homeowner since 1999, called the notices irritating for taxpayers. Village officials have been pursuing a connection to Dunkirk’s water system to reduce reliance on the outdated reservoir, a long-term fix for a system that keeps showing its age.

For now, keep boiling water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth until the notice lifts. Residents who need assistance can call the Fredonia Fire Department at (716) 672-2125.
