JHS Nickname Committee narrow's down field to two names...
The Jamestown High School Nickname Committee has narrowed down it's choices for the school's next nickname to two.  In a press release from the district Wednesday morning... officials say the two names selected following a community survey and discussions with students are the high school... are "Catamounts..." and "Red & Green."  Either will accompany the district’s “big cat” mascot... which was adopted in 2022.  JHS Athletic Director Ben Drake says they appreciate the communities input... and, adds "As we move forward, the committee has taken the public’s voice into consideration in narrowing down our options and we are excited about these two nicknames that we’ll be presenting to our school community.”  While it was another popular choice... Drake says the committee decided to eliminate “Jaguars” from consideration because that's the nickname at Jefferson Middle School.  "Catamount" is another name for the American panther, cougar or mountain lion.  Students are having the first few days of school to weigh in.  The community will also have a chance to voice their opinion on-line at jpsny.org/nickname.  Drake says "Red & Green" was the high school’s first known nickname from 1905-1935 prior to the introduction of the “big cat” logo.  The survey will be open until Sept. 30, and, the committee will then make a recommendation to the school board for final action in December.

City's Public Works Committee discusses need for crosswalk, eliminating "no left turn" sign at pair of intersections...
There's been further discussion about some changes to streets in the city of Jamestown... including a crosswalk, and allowing a left turn at one intersection.  That from City Council Public Works Committee Chairman Randy Daversa... who says the panel Monday night talked more about a request by Third-Ward Councilwoman Regina Brackman for a crosswalk at the corner of Washington and 11th Streets.  Daversa says Interim Public Works Director Mark Roetzer will look into that with the state Department of Transporation.  Daversa says they also discussed eliminating the "No Left Turn" at the intersection of North Main and Third Streets.  He says Roetzer will also talk about changing that with the state DOT... because a main reason for prohibiting the left turn was because of the size of the city's former JARTS Buses.  No specific action was taken on either proposal during Monday night's committee... or full council work session.
