This week... News Director Terry Frank and Jamestown Public School Superintendent Dr. Kevin Whitaker take us "back to school" with a preview of the upcoming school year. That school year begins this Wednesday, Sept. 2 with a half-day of class for all students. However... Dr. Whitaker says the start times for each group -- elementary, middle and high school -- will have a staggered start with the earliest being the high schoolers. The first full day is set for the following day, Thursday, Sept. 3. He says all is in readiness for the new school year with capital improvement projects wrapping up. This Summer... Dr. Whitaker says a lot of the work was done at Persell Middle School on the city's westside. Teacher Orientation has been held, and there will be people in the buildings all week. We also briefly discuss the JPD "District-Wide School Safety Plan..." which includes some aspects that are public and others private so the "bad guys" don't find out what they're doing. He says the biggest changes will be the use of technology to scan handbags, and backpacks.
